![]() ![]() While the openness of the game world is an important facet to games featuring open worlds, the main draw of open-world games is about providing the player with autonomy-not so much the freedom to do anything they want in the game (which is nearly impossible with current computing technology), but the ability to choose how to approach the game and its challenges in the order and manner as the player desires while still constrained by gameplay rules. Open-world games still enforce many restrictions in the game environment, either because of absolute technical limitations or in-game limitations imposed by a game's linearity. Players typically do not encounter loading screens common in linear level designs when moving about the game world, with the open-world game using strategic storage and memory techniques to load the game world in a dynamic and seamless manner. Games with open or free-roaming worlds typically lack level structures like walls and locked doors, or the invisible walls in more open areas that prevent the player from venturing beyond them only at the bounds of an open-world game will players be limited by geographic features like vast oceans or impassable mountains. Notable games in this category include The Legend of Zelda (1986), Grand Theft Auto III (2001) and Minecraft (2011). Minecraft is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.In video games, an open world is a virtual world in which the player can approach objectives freely, as opposed to a world with more linear and structured gameplay. There are millions of players out there, many with enormous talent and the sheer tenacity to keep building and showing their love and dedication on this low resolution blank canvas that is Minecraft. Given that Mojang's open world title was the most-watched YouTube game of 2020, the popularity of this franchise doesn't seem to be waning any time soon. The sheer scale of Minecraft is simply staggering, and people who take on such lofty projects show that there is still so much the game has to offer. That's not to detract from the skills that went into creating it, but Dinaeh has arguably gone above and beyond now that they've started introducing structures into their version. While still an impressive feat by any standard, the difference between this and the newer one that's been posted to Reddit, is the former doesn't have any of the game's buildings. Back in December 2020, another user showed off their creativity by making the Zelda map of Hyrule. Interestingly, this is not the first time Breath of the Wild has been reimagined in the blocky universe. ![]() Much like the Minecraft map which is based on Attack on Titan, as well as many others built by the community, Dinaeh's efforts are equally impressive, and the post suggests that there is more work to come before it's complete. They had some help in constructing the terrain by using heightmap, but other than that, they've done everything else themselves. The Reddit user did say that they haven't created everything from scratch. Posting a series of images to the Minecraft subreddit recently, user Dinaeh has showcased a work in progress which takes Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and recreates it piece by piece in the open world sandbox game. There is seemingly no end to people's imagination, and now it looks as though someone has managed to combine the world of Minecraft with that of another beloved franchise. Fans are well versed in making all sorts of things, from new texture packs, to the modder who turned the blocky world into an almost photo realistic vista. Despite being ten years old at this point, it seems the gaming world is far from done with all the creative endeavors that can be actualized in Minecraft. ![]()
